Mahakumbh Stampede: 30 Dead, 60 Injured; CM Yogi Announces Rs 25 Lakh Ex-Gratia, Judicial Inquiry

๊A ‘stampede-like’ situation broke out at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj early Wednesday after a large number of pilgrims turned up to take a dip in Sangam on the occasion of ‘Mauni Amavasya’. The incident occurred around 2 am where several people, including women and children, suffered injuries with some feared dead.

🅰Ambulances and police vehicles rushed to the Sangam and injured people were taken to the central hospital in the Mela area. Although the exact count of casualties is not clear yet, several media reports said that at least 10 people are feared dead and around 40 injured.

On Tuesday, a day before the Mauni Amavasya, nearly 5 crore people reached for the dip during the fair, according to estimates of the Uttar Pradesh ꧑government, which expects the crowd to be around 10 crore on Wednesday.

💃Following the incident, the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad president Mahant Ravindra Puri said that the seers have called off their Mauni Amavasya’s Amrit Snan.

“You would've seen what happened in the morning, and that's why we have decided to... All of our saints and seers were ready for the ‘snan’ when we were informed about this incident. That's why we have decided to call off our ‘snan’ on 'Mauni Amavasya',” Mahant Ravindra Puri told PTI.

As per the tradition, Akharas belonging to the three sects🔥 'Sanyasi, Bairagi, and Udaseen' take the holy dip in a set sequence following a procession to the Sangam Ghat on special bathing dates like the Mauni Amavasya, which are marked by special celestial alignments and considered holy among Hindus.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath 𒀰following a stampede-like incident early Wednesday at the Maha Kumbh, and called for immediate support measures.

🐻The prime minister is continuously monitoring the situation in Kumbh and is constant contact with the state government. He has spoken with the chief minister three times till now and is giving directions for normalisation of the situation and relief, official sources said.

෴"PM Modi spoke to Yogi Ji about the situation at the Kumbh Mela, reviewed the developments, and called for immediate support measures," an official said.

🎃"During the Maha Kumbh, the news of stampede on the banks of Teerthraj Sangam in which several people lost their lives and many others got injured is extremely heart-rending," Kharge wrote on X.

🐼"Half-baked arrangements, VIP movement, paying more attention to self-promotion and mismanagement are responsible for this. Such arrangements despite spending thousands of crores of rupees are condemnable," the Congress chief said.

According to news agency Reuters,🅷 more than seven people were killed and around 10 injured in the Mahakumbh stampede.

🍎"More than seven people have been killed in the stampede and around 10 others injured," the agency quoted an official who did not want to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

🌠Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav expressed grief over several people being injured in the stampede at Sangam and underlined the need for enhanced surveillance at the event.

🔯He called on the UP government to take immediate action to support the injured and prevent further chaos.

💛UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath appealed to the pilgrims in Mahakumbh to take a dip in the Ganga at their nearest ghats and not try to reach the Sangam Nose.

🐟"All of you should follow the instructions of the administration and cooperate in making arrangements. People are bathing peacefully at all the ghats of Sangam. Do not pay any attention to any rumours," he wrote on X.

🐻Congress leader and Leader of Oppposition Rahul Gandhi expressed condolences for the victims of the Mahakumbh stampede. He slammed the government for mismanagement and focus on VIP culture.

"Mismanagement and administration's special focus on VIP movement instead of common devotees are responsible for this tragic incident. There is still a lot of time left for the Maha Kumbh, many more Mahasnans are to take place. The government should improve the system to prevent a tragic incident like today from happening again. VIP culture should be curbed and the government should make better arrangements to meet the needs of common devotees," he wrote on X.
ꦿHe further requested Congress leaders and workers to help the affected families.

🍌Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the devotees who lost their loved ones and wished for the speedy recovery of those injured in the Mahakumbh stampede on Wednesday.

꧑He said that he has spoken to CM Yogi and is constantly in touch with the UPstate government. The Prime Minister assured that the local administration is engaged in helping the victims in every possible way.

🌱Vaibhav Krishna, DIG Mahakumbh said that over 10 crore people are expected to visit Mahakumbh today. He assured that all police officials and personnel have been deployed in the Mela area for crowd regulation since Tuesday evening.

"People are bathing at all the ghats here peacefully... In the morning, there was pressure and a huge crowd. Many Akharas told us to regulate the crowd and that they would come out for the snan later. Now that the crowd is under control, our preparations for the Akharas and saints are in place. The Akhara Marg and Akhara Ghat are ready. The whole area is sanitised and we have conveyed this to the Akharas and they will soon start coming here for snan..." Krishna told ANI.

ꦏGoa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday slammed Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge for his remarks about the Mahakumbh underway in Prayagraj and asserted hatred for "Sanatan Hindu Sanskruti" was deep rooted in the opposition party.

꧂Earlier in the day, while addressing the Congress' 'Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan' rally in Mhow in Madhya Pradesh, Kharge had asked if taking a holy dip in the Ganga during Mahakumbh would end poverty in the country.

༒"Shame on INC President Mallikarjun Kharge. Hatred for Sanatan Hindu Sanskruti is deep rooted in the Congress, and they have a habit of expressing it in public often. I strongly condemn this insulting remarks of INC President," Sawant said in a post on X.

♛Incidentally, during the day Union Home Minister Amit Shah had taken a holy dip in the Ganga at the Mahakumbh.

꧟Due to the stampede in Prayagraj during the Maha Kumbh 2025 mela, at least seven people are assumed dead. News agency Reuters further added that at least 35 people have been injured due to the crowd crush.

ꦓAn official update for the death toll is awaited from the UP government.

♌Expressing condolences to the devotees who lost their lives in the stampede, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar said, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic accident that took place at the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh. I express my condolences to the bereaved families of the devotees who lost their loved ones in the accident and wish for the speedy recovery of the injured. May God give strength to the bereaved families in this hour of grief.”

♓In view of the restrictions imposed after the stampede, Niranjani Akhara chief Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Kailashanand Giri ji Maharaj said, "The government and the entire administration is involved in managing things here. I just had a talk with (CM) Yogi ji over several issues and he expressed his concerns. The Akhara will follow its tradition, however, it will be done on a small scale. We will go for symbolic 'Shahi Snan' in sometime."

🐭Opposition leaders in Uttar Pradesh, including SP president Akhilesh Yadav, on Wednesday targeted the Yogi Adityanath government over the stampede at the Maha Kumbh, saying it highlighted the failure of the state government.

🐽Yadav demanded that those who claimed "world-class arrangements" in the Maha Kumbh should resign from their posts taking moral responsibility for the stampede.

ꦰ"In order to re-establish faith in the system among the saint community and devotees who have come to the Maha Kumbh, it is necessary that the administration and management of the Maha Kumbh should be immediately handed over to the army instead of the UP government," he said on X.

🔯"Now that the truth of the claims of making world class arrangements has come out in front of everyone, those who were claiming and spreading false propaganda about it should resign from their posts taking moral responsibility for the people killed in this accident," he said.

ꦫVisuals of a helicopter showering flower petals on seers were captured as saints headed towards Sangam, Prayagraj, to take the sacred 'Amrit Snan' on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya.

🧸Led by Mahant Ravindra Puri, head of the Akhil Bhartiya Akhara Parishad, the procession of akharas made its way on foot towards the Sangam for the holy bath. The procession, notably less grand than usual, began around 2:30 PM.

✤The Amrit snan was originally scheduled in the early hours of the day but was postponed following the stampede. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said a consensus has been reached with the akharas that they would take the holy dip only after the crowd pressure has decreased at the ghats.

I congratulate Chief Minister (Yogi Adityanath) and the administration for making such arrangements."

ꦓCommenting on the stampede, he said, "It's a conspiracy by the opposition. This must be investigated."

🗹Commenting on the current situation after the 'Amrit Snan' began, DIG Mahakumbh Vaibhav Krishna told ANI, "Juna Akhara and two other Akharas are going for Amrit Snan now. Everything is peaceful, situation is under control. Since there were a lot of devotees, the Akharas proposed to us that they would delay their Amrit Snan. This was a huge support from the Akharas to the administration...The injured in the stampede are undergoing treatment. No one is serious, everyone is out of danger."

Citing police sources, Reuters ༺reported that nearly 40 bodies have been brought to a hospital morgue near the site of a stampede at the Maha Kumbh.

🦹However, there has been no official announcement of casualties from the local government, nearly twelve hours after the stampede.

𝔍Expression condolence over the death of the devotees in the Maha Kumbh stampede, Union Minister Chirag Paswan said, "The incident is very unfortunate; I, on behalf of my party, pay tributes to those who died in this incident and also pray for speedy recovery of the injured. The unprecedented crowd of devotees visiting Prayagraj this time, all possible arrangements were made by the state government, so that the crowd could be managed... The reason for the stampede is being investigated. PM himself is monitoring this; he expressed his concern in today's Cabinet meeting as well."

ꩲFormer Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, in a post on X in Hindi, said, "The news of many devotees losing their lives and many getting injured in the stampede at the Sangam banks of Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya is very sad and unfortunate."

💝"I pay my tribute to the devotees who lost their lives in this accident and express my deepest condolences to their families," Hooda said while wishing speedy recovery of the injured.

🔯Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala, in a post on X, said, "The news of many devotees getting killed in a stampede in Maha Kumbh is very sad. Wishing speedy recovery to all those injured in this accident."

☂Senior Congress leader Kumari Selja, who is an MP from Haryana’s Sirsa, expressed grief over the incident and said the government should immediately improve the arrangements so that such incidents do not happen in future.

🎐Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday announced an ex gratia of Rs 25 lakh each for the kin of the deceased at the stampede at the Maha Kumbh. The state government officials informed that public that the tragic accident took the lives of at least 30 people and 60 others were injured.

﷽The West Bengal government on Wednesday decided to send a team to Maha Kumbh as it did not receive any information from the Uttar Pradesh administration about the condition of pilgrims from the state following a stampede there.

♑A team of officials from the Resident Commissioner's office in New Delhi would go to Prayagraj to take stock of the situation, he added.

💝"We are unable to get information about the conditions of those who have gone from our state to Prayagraj for the Kumbh Mela. Attempts to get information from the UP government did not yield any result.

✅"Following this, we have decided to send a team from the office of the Resident Commissioner in New Delhi to Uttar Pradesh to understand the situation and condition of the pilgrims from West Bengal," the bureaucrat said.

🅷Uttar Pradesh minister Sanjay Nishad on Wednesday expressed grief over the stampede in Mahakumbh Nagar and said "minor incidents" do happen in "such a big event".

ꩲNishad is the chief of the Nishad party and fisheries minister in the Yogi Adityanath government.

🍒"In such a big event and when there is such a huge crowd, minor incidents do happen," he said while calling it sad.

💦He said Chief Minister Adityanath is looking into this matter. One should take a bath wherever one finds space and one should not believe in rumours, he added.
