Mahakumbh Stampede 'Unfortunate Incident,' Says SC After Rejecting Plea Against UP Govt

The Supreme Court of India has 🐽refused to entertain a plea against the Uttar Pradesh government regarding the stampede at the Maha Kumbh 202🀅5 mela.

The beꦗnch comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice PV Sanjay Kumar dismissed the PIL demanding action against the UP government for its mismanagement of the ꦯmela.

While dismissౠing the petition, the couꦫrt redirected the petitioner to raise the plea with the Allahabad High Court.

"It is an unfortunate incident, something which is of concern. but go to the High Court. There is already a judicial commission const♛ituted" CJI Khanna told Advocate Vishal Tiwari.

As per Live Law, the plea filed before the Supreme Court states that the UP government has been "negligent" in avoiding the s🧔tampede. It adds that there were "lapses, negligence and utter failure of the administration."

The stampede at the Mahakumbh mela occurred in the early hours of January 29, 2025. As per the UP government🤡, around 30 people were killed in the tragic incident. However, the death toll is expected to be higher than stated.

The case will now be filed before the Allahabad High Court, where a similar petitio🌱n has been filed.

Senior Advocate Mukul Rastogi, who appeared for the state of UP, stated that a judicial inqu෴iry into the stampede is already undeꦓrway at the High Court. Rastogi added that a similar petition has also been filed before Allahabad HC.
