WATCH | Outlook's Women's Day Issue "Women At Work"

This International Women's Day, let us raise a toast to the pocket in women’s clothing—for the women who smash expectations and gender roles.

♛All work could be categorised as non-traditional for women. They have always been expected to take care of the household. Each time a woman has ventured out into the world, she has had to fight to exist, to flourish, and to be. They have been confined to their own category with a prefix—“women”—such as “women filmmakers”, “women directors”, “women drivers”, and so on.

🦂Consider the fight for a humble pocket. It carries the universe. For us.

⛦As an editor, there is always contempt to contend with. Newsrooms are unkind places for women journalists, much like the world in general. You are expected to listen, to comply, and if you do not, you are called a slave-driver, a fool, a non-person—by men and even some women who have yet to realise that even pockets were once denied to us. There are too many expectations placed upon us. Expectations that are oppressive. We must shake them off. Like handbags.
