The Delhi Capitals sealed a commanding 6-wicket win over Gujarat Giants in a one-sided Women's Premier League 2025 match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Tuesday. (Match Highlights | Full Coverage)
🍎Asked to bat first, the Gujarat Giants could only manage a modest 127 for nine in the first half. However, Delhi knocked off the target in only 15.1 overs posting 131/4, sealing their third win of the season from five outings with the help of Shafali Verma (44) and Jess Jonassen's (61 not out) fireworks.
🀅Gujarat Giants struggled to build any momentum in their innings, losing both openers, Beth Mooney (10) and Harleen Deol (5), cheaply. Shikha Pandey and Marizanne Kapp dismantled the top order, with Pandey dismissing Mooney and Kashvee Gautam for a duck, while Kapp removed Deol and trapped Phoebe Litchfield lbw for a duck.
🎃The only real resistance came from Bharti Fulmali, who played a crucial unbeaten knock of 40 off 29 balls, including two sixes and four fours. Batting at No. 8, she counter-attacked to drag Gujarat past 125 after they had collapsed to 60/6 at the halfway mark.
🥂Chasing a modest target of 129, Delhi Capitals, known for their explosive powerplay performances, got off to a strong start. They comfortably reached the target with 29 balls to spare, thanks to a blistering 27-ball 44 from opener Shafali Verma, her highest score of the season.
It was a brisk 37-ball stand for the second wicket between Verma and Jonassen for 74 runs which provided Delhi Capitals ღthe platform for the huge win, denting the Giants' hopes of a fightback with the ball after they had removed Meg Lanning (3) early on in the chase.
ꦯVerma looked in her elements as she hammered three sixes and five fours before her charge was ended by Giants skipper Ashleigh Gardner who trapped her in front of the wickets.
𓃲Jonassen, however, remained unbeaten on 61 off 32 balls (9x4s, 2x6s) for her first half-century of the season.
♏The pair of Verma and Jonassen pulverised the Giants bowling attack to gather runs from all corners of the ground, indicating that the pitch did not have any demons as it appeared to be in the first half.
ꦺWith this result, the Delhi Capitals claim the top spot of the WPL 2025 table with 6 points. Meanwhile, Gujarat remain at the bottom with only 2 points from 4 outings.
