Why does war have a prominent place in your imagination and your works?
♛I write about the effects of the wars against colonialism in Zimbabwe. These wars affected generations of people and continue to do so. The history of the country and its citizens is a direct result of the causes, process and outcomes of the war. There is societal, family and individual trauma. The history of the wars has also largely been dominated by the coloniser’s perspective and so it is important for my writing to add to the perspectives of the formerly colonised Africans. I write both essays and historical fiction based on extensive research into the various archives--video, audio, literature, newspapers, magazines, etc.--of Zimbabwe
Why is the world plagued by wars, some of them never-ending?
🌼I think we have wars for different reasons, in different places. I can only speak for the wars in my country. Our wars were for liberation from colonisation; we fought for our land and our freedom and livelihood. However, our freedom was made possible by support from Communist and Socialist states who were involved in their own Cold War. From that perspective, the larger geopolitical war (East vs West) is the perpetual war, and other wars are proxies and sub-wars within, parallel and outside of that context.
Can we hope to see everlasting peace?
🍨Peace is not possible for as long as there are dreams of empire and pursuit of capital
