In an extremely rare occurrence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with US President Joe Biden, on Thursday answered two burning questions from journalists in a joint press conferenc🐷e at the White House. The questions, one from an Indian journalist and one from an Amerꦑican, revolved around the human rights situation in India and climate action by the two countries.

"Prime Minister and I had a good discussion about democratic values," Biden said when asked for his views on human rights violations being overlooked in India. "We believe in the dignity of every citizen. It's in America's DNA and I believe in India's DNA 🅠that the whole world has a stake in our success."

Modi, who agreed to speak to the press for the first time since becoming prime minister nine years ago, also answered questions on reports of discrimination in India. He reiterated Biden's remark and said that democracy was in India's DNA. "It stuns me to hear that India calls itself a democracy because it is a democracy...As President Biden says, democracy is in t🧜he DNA of India and US," PM Modi said.

"Democracy can deliver and when we talk about democracy, there is no discrimination in India on the basis of caste, creed, religion etc. That is why, India believes in sabka saath, sabka vikas, sabka vishwas, sabka prayaas𓂃 and walks ahead with it," the prime minister said denying human rights violations.

Responding to a question about the steps taken 𓂃toward climate action, Biden said that climate change was an "existential threat to humanity". Meanwhile, PM Modi highlighted that India was the only G20 country that kept the promise it took in Paris to protect the environment. “Environment has an important place in our culture. We don’t believe in exploitation of nature,” he said.

Notably, during the last Indian Sta𝔉te Visit of former prime minister Manmohan Singh in November 2009, the two sides took one question each.
