Kolkata's Sealdah Court on Saturday pronounced accused Sanjay Roy guilty of rape-mꦛurder of on-duty doctor at RG Kar hospital in Kolkata. The court wilꦜl pronounce the sentence for the accused on Monday (January 20).

As per reports, accused Sanjay Roy was found guilty of rape and murder governed under sections 64, 66 and 103 (1) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in the RG Kar rape and murder case. Sections 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita that governs rape and Secti🌟ons 66 deals with punishments for death and murder. Section 103 (1) of BNS entails a maximum punishment of death or life imprisonment.

The judgement was pronounced nearly two m🎐onths after the in-camera trial commenced in November last year and 16🙈2 days after the heinous crime was committed on August 9, 2024.

At the time of the verdict, Roy claimed in court tꦅhat he was framed. The judge, however, said he would have an opportunity to speak on Monday before the sentence is pronounced.

The medic’s pa𝓀rents thanked the judge for the guilty verdict and said the court honoured the trust ꧋they had reposed in it.

The case involves the allege🎃d rape and murder of a 28-year-old postgraduate medical trainee on August 9, whose lifeless body was discovered in a hospital seminar room.

Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Polic♋e, was arrested the next day.

I𒊎nvestigatꦜors alleged that he acted alone, but the victim’s family and junior doctors’ groups suspected a wider conspiracy.

Roy, 💯currently held at Presidency Jail, has consistently maintained his innocence, cl♔aiming he is being framed.

The crime sent shockwaves across the nation, triggering protests over workplace sa꧒fety for medica༒l professionals.

♊The trial, which began in late August, unfo♏lded behind closed doors in a closely monitored courtroom.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has sought the harshest punishment for Roy, presenting evidence, including CCTV footage and his presence near the crime scene.

However, the victim’s parents have repeatedly 🌌questioned the thoroughness of the in🐼vestigation.

“One person alone couldn’♑t have done this. We demand a larger investigation to uncover the full truth," the victimꦚ’s parents stated.

The August 9 crime triggered a state-wide strike by jꦐunior doctors, temporarily paralysing h🔯ealthcare services.
