If the US president-elect raises customs duties on Canadian goods, Americans will face a "Trump༺ tariffs tax," warned Canada’s Foreign Minister on January 17, promising a strong counter-response in the event of a trade war, reports said. Donald Trump, set to return to the White House next week, has indicated his plan to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports as part of broader economic and foreign policies targeting Mexico, China, and other trade partners.

“This would be the largest trade war between Canada🔥 and the US in decades,” said Foreign Minister Melanie Joly. “The US would be initiating a trade war against us. We are fully prepared to exert maximum pressure,” she said during a press conference in Washington. She also emphasized that Canada has a range of measures in place should Trump follow through with his plan, which would severely impact Canadian consumers and jobs.

𒐪The tariffs are a key element of Trump's broader economic strategy, which also targets Mexico, China, and other trading partners. In response, Canada is preparing countermeasures.

๊According to an AFP report, Ottawa is contemplating retaliatory tariffs on US goods, including steel products, ceramics, glassware, and orange juice. "We will be strong and unequivocal in our defense of Canada and Canadians. The proposed tariffs would put American jobs at risk, raise prices for American consumers, put our collective security at risk and raise costs all across the continent,” media reports quoted the outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
