RG Kar Case: Protesting Doctors To Not Be Marked Absent From Duty, Rules SC

🔯The Supreme Court of India has stated that all doctors who were on protest due to the RG Kar rape and murder case, will not be marked absent from duty. In a ruling favouring the protesting doctors, the SC ruled that attendance shall be regularised if they resumed work after the bench order in August 2024.

ꦗThe matter was heard by a bench led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna. During the hearing, SC asked hospitals, including Delhi AIIMS to regularise doctors' absence during protests over the rape and murder of a resident doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata.

🥃Noting that the majority of the hospitals had regularized doctors' attendance while some marked them as absent from duty or on leave.

ജ"We deem it appropriate to clarify that in case the doctors have joined after 22.8.24 will be regularised and not treated as absence from duty, this direction is issued in peculiar facts and circumstances and shall not be treated as precedent," said CJI Khanna.

🍬Thousands of doctors launched a protest following the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Doctors across India announced a strike and boycotted work to demand justice for their colleague. However, on August 22, 2024, the Supreme Court ไissued an order asking the doctors to resume work.

ꦦWith this hearing, the top court has ruled that all protesting doctors who resumed work after this order, shall have their attendance regularised.

RG Kar Case Accused Sentenced To Life

🧜The accused Sanjay Roy was convicted in the case, despite him denying involvement, and was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Kolkata court last week.

In response to this sentencing, the West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee 𓆏filed a plea before the Calcutta High Court, demanding a death sentence for Roy.
