☂Days after the Mamata Banerjee government filed an appeal before the Calcutta High Court seeking death penalty for RG Kar rape-murder accused Sanjay Roy, the Central Bureau of Investigation is also likely to file an appeal seeking for capital punishment for the convict before the High Court.

♒Furthermore, junior doctors across the state and the parents of the 31-year-old resident doctor who was killed have sought for CBI to further probe the case.

After State Govt, CBI Demands Death Penalty

As per a PTI report, the CBI is set to file an appeal before the Calcutta High Court ꌺseeking a death sentence for the RG Kar rape-murder accused Sanjay Roy. Roy, who has stated he is being framed for the crime, was convicted in the case in 2024.

Earlier this week, Sealdah court sentenced the convict to life imprisonment until death. The central agency had filed a plea before the trial court but was turned down by Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das who said that the RG Kar was "not the rarest of rare" crime India has seen.

ꦛThe agency is expected to move against the Sealdah court order and seek death penalty for Roy.

💞The 31-year-old resident doctor was brutally raped and murdered allegedly by Roy in the seminar hall of the medical college and hospital. The doctor's death sparked nationwide protests as doctors from across India demanded justice for the victim and better safety for healthcare workers.

Doctors, Victim's Parents Demand Further Probe

🧜With CBI's appeal for the death penalty, the father of the deceased doctor has called for the Central Bureau of Investigation to continue its probe and find all those involved in the crime.

💛Speaking to PTI, the father said he would "seek the advice of my counsel to understand the move of the central probe agency."

𒐪"I just came to know about CBI planning to file an appeal before the Calcutta High Court seeking death sentence for Sanjay Roy, but was unable to understand the implications of it. I will talk to my lawyer before commenting on this. However, I would like to say that I respect the verdict of the judge of the Sealdah court. The CBI must investigate and arrest all the other criminals involved in murdering my daughter," he added further.

⛄Meanwhile, doctors in West Bengal have been protesting against Sanjay Roy's sentencing and stated that life imprisonment "does not deliver justice" to the victim.

𓆏"We need the CBI to act properly and ensure that the investigative process addresses the issue fully, bringing every culprit to justice. They must investigate institutional corruption and consequences that have jeopardised the judicial process, as well as the tampering of evidence, destruction of infrastructure, and the hushing up of matters, including the failure to give NOC to file charges against the then principal of RG Kar and high-ranking officials of the police department," Dr. Kaushik Chaki, president of the West Bengal Doctors' Forum, told news agency PTI.
