Uttarakhand And UCC | What We Know

꧑The Uniform Civil Code for the state of Uttarakhand as a total of 392 sections. These sections are divided into four parts and seven chapters.

🍌Across these 392 sections, the state government has covered a series of issues such as providing equal rights to women in matters of marriage, divorce, alimony and inheritance of property.

🌞The state uniform civil code also bans polygamy and sets the marriageable age for men and women at 21 years and 18 years, respectively. The registration of a marriage would also be made mandatory under the law.

🃏Under the state UCC, failure to register a live-in relationship would result in affine of Rs 10,000 or imprisonment of three months, or both. This law, when implemented, will be applicable to all citizens of the state, except the Schedule Tribe population.

'Unacceptable': AIMPLB opposed UCC

💛Back in August, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board has rejected the uniform civil code and stated that such as law would be "unacceptable" for Muslims across India. The statement from the Muslim board comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for the "secular civil code" in his Independence Day 2024 speech.

𒊎As per reports, an official press release from the AIMPLB stated - "The All India Muslim Personal Law Board considers the Prime Minister's call, on the occasion of Independence Day, for a Secular Civil Code and terming religious personal laws as communal ones is highly objectionable."

🐼The board added that if implemented, the civil code would clash with Sharia law, which they would not compromise on.
