Biography

﷽Sanjay Balraj Dutt, fondly called ‘sanju baba’ born on July 29, 1959, is an Indian actor, playback singer, and film producer known for his work primarily in Hindi cinema. With a career spanning over four decades, he has also appeared in a few Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, and Punjabi films. As one of the most recognized and beloved figures in Indian cinema, Dutt has acted in over 135 films and garnered numerous accolades for his performances.

Hailing from the prestigious Dutt family of Punjabi descent, Sanjay is the son of legendary actor-politicians Sunil Dutt and Nargis. He began his acting journey with Rocky in 1981, a film directed by his father. While his career saw a rocky start, the crime thriller Naam in 1986 marked a significant turning point and established him as a serious actor. Over the years, he rose to superstardom with films such as Thanedaar (1990), Saajan and Sadak (both 1991), Adharm (1992), Khalnayak (1993), Aatish (1994), and Vaastav: The Reality (1999). His portrayal in Vaastav൩ earned him the prestigious Filmfare Award for Best Actor, further cementing his place in the industry.

Dutt's most iconic role came as Munna Bhai in Rajkumar Hirani's Munna Bhai series (2003–2006). The films not only showcased his comedic brilliance but also delivered his biggest solo commercial success, making "Munna Bhai" a household name. From 2000 onward, he delivered several notable performances in films like Jodi No. 1 (2001), Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007), Agneepath (2012), and PK (2014). However, his career faced another downturn, except for his standout performances as an antagonist in K.G.F: Chapter 2 (2022) and Leo (2023). These films became massive hits, with K.G.F: Chapter 2 ranking as the fourth highest-grossing Indian film and Leo as the twelfth.

ꦉDespite his on-screen success, Sanjay Dutt’s personal life has been fraught with challenges. In 1993, he was arrested under the TADA and Arms Act for possessing illegal weapons connected to the 1993 Bombay bombings. He was convicted under the Arms Act and sentenced to five years in prison. Throughout the legal process, Dutt was granted bail multiple times and completed his sentence in 2016. His struggles with the law, coupled with a turbulent personal life, have been a frequent subject of media attention.

In 2018, his extraordinary life journey was brought to the big screen in the biopic Sanju꧋, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Dutt. The film, which included a special appearance by Dutt himself, was met with critical acclaim and became one of Indian cinema’s highest-grossing movies. The story of his life — a mix of trials, triumphs, and redemption — continues to inspire audiences worldwide.

🌌Through his many highs and lows, Sanjay Dutt has remained a resilient figure in Indian cinema, embodying strength, talent, and the power of reinvention.
